WHAT IS IT?
Predictive analysis focuses on determining outcomes based on performance and demographic data. The concept behind this method is that, by acknowledging how many students will be earning a degree for that year, higher education institutions can make better decisions.

WHY IMORTANT
One of the most significant advantages of using predictive analytics in higher education is that it can positively affect the ratio of caseload vs. full-time advisors at colleges.

Certain students need more individualized attention, which is why using predictive analysis to determine who they are and thus increase their chances of getting a degree is something colleges are starting to do.

A major theoretical and experimental breakthrough that allows scientists to predict, with an unprecedented precision, when a soft material will crack and fail.

WHY IMPORTANT
The findings have immediate implications for the engineering and manufacture of a wide range of polymers. They also provide insights into how natural soft materials -- such as the connective tissues in our bodies and even our brains -- break down. This advance provides a missing link between chemistry and materials science and engineering for polymer networks to understand the mechanics of cavitation or the sudden, unstable crack-causing expansions within soft materials and tissues.

A DAO is an organization that is focused on a specific mission, and its members work in coordination according to a shared set of rules encoded on a blockchain. The major purpose of the decentralized autonomous organization is to help eradicate a significant problem in many conventional organizations — the principal-agent problem.

WHY IMPORTANT

The DAO is one major invention that is challenging current systems of governance. Utilizing NFTs, DAOs are changing our perspective of how organizations and systems should be run, and they put further credence to the idea that the optimal form of governance does not have to do with hierarchical structures.

ETH researchers have developed a machine learning method that automatically detects whether a machine sounds "healthy" or not.

WHY IMPORTANT

The industry will be able to use a tool that automatically monitors the equipment and warns them in time—without requiring any special prior knowledge—when conspicuous, abnormal, or "unhealthy" sounds occur in the equipment.

Durable skills used to be called "life skills" or "soft skills," which downplays how important they are in the workplace.

WHY IMPORTANT
Durable skills are essential because workers entering the workforce today will probably change careers seven or eight times in their lifetime. We also know that technical skills age out because of constant economic and technological changes. But durable skills like critical thinking, working collaboratively, and communicating effectively with others do not change. They are evergreen. After reviewing 500,000 job postings from 11,000 Idaho companies, Emsi found that these are the top 10 durable skills employers want in order of preference: Communication, leadership; metacognition (self-awareness); critical thinking; collaboration; character; growth mindset; mindfulness; creativity; and fortitude.

The top five durable skills are wanted by employers four times more than the top five technical skills.

The ambitious company wants TO become one of the world's leading merchants of surveillance technology, even as some lawmakers worry the company poses a dangerous threat to civil liberties and privacy rights.

WHY IMPORTANT

One hundred billion images in its' index of faces are the goal. Lawmakers worry the company poses a dangerous threat to Americans' privacy rights. Those images — equivalent to 14 photos for each of the 7 billion people on Earth — would help power a surveillance system used for arrests and criminal investigations by thousands of law enforcement and government agencies around the world.

The company wants to expand beyond scanning faces for the police, saying it could monitor "gig economy" workers. They are researching several new technologies that could identify someone based on how they walk, detect their location from a photo, or scan their fingerprints from afar.

In a groundbreaking infection control innovation, a team of Korean scientists has created a novel material that, when applied to any surface, provides antibacterial/antiviral properties.

WHY IMPORTANT
Adding just a tiny amount of the additive to a range of resins increased the antibacterial properties to 99.99%. Antiviral properties were increased ten-fold in just two hours without modifying the existing products' optical, thermal, or mechanical properties. Additionally, the antibacterial/antiviral additive,  made from non-toxic substances, does not contain organic antibacterial agents and nano compounds.

The Ark Big Ideas 2022 report has suggested some possible convergences and their specific applications. For instance, a mixture of robotics, battery technologies, Web 3.0, Blockchain, the Metaverse, and artificial intelligence can be leveraged to decrease the cost of transportation activities. Similarly, next-generation DNA sequencing, artificial intelligence, and gene therapies can together lead to better healthcare. At the same time, the convergence of application programming interfaces, social platforms, and blockchain technology could help cut out the middleman and allow for direct business collaboration between firms and markets.

WHY IMPORTANT

The report, along with having a bullish prediction of the total enterprise value of “disruptive innovation technologies” rising from $14 trillion in 2020 to $210 trillion in 2030, also identified several technologies we may see in the future.
