School surveillance of students via laptops may do more harm than good

WHAT IT IS

Documents the trend that could easily be described as Orwellian – the vast majority of schools are also using those devices to keep tabs on what students are doing in their personal lives.

WHY IMORTANT

80% of teachers and 77% of high school students reported that their schools had installed artificial intelligence-based surveillance software on these devices to monitor students’ online activities and what is stored in the computer. When students know that their every move and everything read and written is watched, they are also less likely to develop into adults with a high level of self-confidence. In general, surveillance has a negative impact on students’ ability to act and use analytical reasoning. It also hinders the development of the skills and mindset needed to exercise their rights.

Polymer discovery gives 3D-printed sand super strength

WHAT IS IT?

Researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory designed a novel polymer to bind and strengthen silica sand for binder jet additive manufacturing, a 3D-printing method used by industries for prototyping and part production.

WHY IMPORTANT

The printable polymer enables sand structures with intricate geometries and exceptional strength -- and is also water soluble. Silica sand is a cheap, readily available material that has been gaining interest in automotive and aerospace sectors for creating composite parts. Lightweight materials, such as carbon fiber or fiberglass, are wrapped around 3D-printed sand cores, or "tools," and cured with heat. Silica sand is attractive for tooling because it does not change dimensions when heated and because it offers a unique advantage in washable tooling.

A Game Changer for Smart Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices

WHAT IT IS?

Functional electrolyte design will be a game-changer for the field of smart EES devices. Truly smart energy storage has the potential to become a game-changing, key technology in the approaching 4th Industrial Revolution. Research is continuing at a considerable pace, opening the way to power future technology in a manner not currently possible with conventional EES devices. Growth in the smart electronics market has led to strong demand for the development of new, efficient power sources.

WHY IMPORTANT

Future smart electronics require more than just superior levels of energy storage, though: they also require EES devices that can monitor internal parameters in real-time and regulate and adjust their internal energy storage. Internal parameters include temperature, mechanical properties, and voltage. Power sources also need to be reliable. This is not possible with current EES technologies.

High-performance, low-cost machine learning infrastructure is accelerating innovation in the cloud machine learning technologies

WHAT IS IT?

To enable customers to accelerate their AI/ML transformation, AWS is building high-performance and low-cost machine learning chips. AWS Inferentia is the first machine learning chip built from the ground up by AWS for the lowest cost machine learning inference in the cloud..

WHY IMPORTANT

Artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI and ML) are key technologies that help organizations develop new ways to increase sales, reduce costs, streamline business processes, and understand their customers better, BUT as deep learning models become larger and more sophisticated theyresult in rising costs to run underlying infrastructure to train and deploy these models.
