5 cybersecurity threats to watch out for in 2022
A flurry of new threats, technologies, and business models have emerged in the cybersecurity space as the world shifted to a remote work model in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and has subsequently moved to a ‘hybrid’ work culture. These cyberattacks target everyone, but trends show that small businesses are one of the most common targets.

 WHY IMPORTANT

Cybersecurity risks are increasing with rise in digital adoption. Being aware of what could go wrong in terms of cybersecurity is the first step towards prevention. In 2022, we should see a massive increase in cybersecurity awareness. There needs to be a shift from ‘It can’t happen to us’ to ‘It can happen to anyone and anytime’. This shift will help to reduce the cyber risks to a great extent.

Super jelly’ can survive being run over by a car

Researchers have developed a jelly-like material that can withstand the equivalent of an elephant standing on it, and completely recover to its original shape, even though it’s 80% water. The soft-yet-strong material, developed by a team at the University of Cambridge, looks and feels like a squishy jelly, but acts like an ultra-hard, shatterproof glass when compressed, despite its high water content. view

WHY IMPORTANT

This is the first time that such significant resistance to compression has been incorporated into a soft material. The ‘super jelly’ could be used for a wide range of potential applications, including soft robotics, bioelectronics or even as a cartilage replacement for biomedical use.

The Crazy Dream Of A Flow Battery Electric Vehicle Is Not So Crazy Any More.
“slurry electrode iron flow batteries” being developed at Case Western Reserve could someday be simple refrigerator-sized units placed at the end of a city block or even in the basement of a house to store wind- or solar-generated energy for 10 to 24 hours,

WHY IMPORTANT
For those of you new to the topic, the “flow” in a flow battery is literal. The idea is to produce electricity by making two specially treated liquids flow adjacent to each other. Typically the liquids are separated by a thin membrane, though researchers have been working on advanced tech without one.

With the right tweaks, flow batteries can be inexpensive, and they can be made with raw materials that are abundant, eco-friendly, and shielded from geopolitical complications.

School surveillance of students via laptops may do more harm than good

WHAT IT IS

Documents the trend that could easily be described as Orwellian – the vast majority of schools are also using those devices to keep tabs on what students are doing in their personal lives.

WHY IMORTANT

80% of teachers and 77% of high school students reported that their schools had installed artificial intelligence-based surveillance software on these devices to monitor students’ online activities and what is stored in the computer. When students know that their every move and everything read and written is watched, they are also less likely to develop into adults with a high level of self-confidence. In general, surveillance has a negative impact on students’ ability to act and use analytical reasoning. It also hinders the development of the skills and mindset needed to exercise their rights.
