Super jelly’ can survive being run over by a car

Researchers have developed a jelly-like material that can withstand the equivalent of an elephant standing on it, and completely recover to its original shape, even though it’s 80% water. The soft-yet-strong material, developed by a team at the University of Cambridge, looks and feels like a squishy jelly, but acts like an ultra-hard, shatterproof glass when compressed, despite its high water content. view

WHY IMPORTANT

This is the first time that such significant resistance to compression has been incorporated into a soft material. The ‘super jelly’ could be used for a wide range of potential applications, including soft robotics, bioelectronics or even as a cartilage replacement for biomedical use.

WHY IMPORTANT
For those of you new to the topic, the “flow” in a flow battery is literal. The idea is to produce electricity by making two specially treated liquids flow adjacent to each other. Typically the liquids are separated by a thin membrane, though researchers have been working on advanced tech without one.

With the right tweaks, flow batteries can be inexpensive, and they can be made with raw materials that are abundant, eco-friendly, and shielded from geopolitical complications.

School surveillance of students via laptops may do more harm than good

80% of teachers and 77% of high school students reported that their schools had installed artificial intelligence-based surveillance software on these devices to monitor students’ online activities and what is stored in the computer. When students know that their every move and everything read and written is watched, they are also less likely to develop into adults with a high level of self-confidence. Polymer discovery gives 3D-printed sand super strength

WHAT IS IT?

Researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory designed a novel polymer to bind and strengthen silica sand for binder jet additive manufacturing, a 3D-printing method used by industries for prototyping and part production.

WHY IMPORTANT

The printable polymer enables sand structures with intricate geometries and exceptional strength -- and is also water soluble. Silica sand is a cheap, readily available material that has been gaining interest in automotive and aerospace sectors for creating composite parts. Lightweight materials, such as carbon fiber or fiberglass, are wrapped around 3D-printed sand cores, or "tools," and cured with heat. Silica sand is attractive for tooling because it does not change dimensions when heated and because it offers a unique advantage in washable tooling.
