EACH YEAR, the NMTC Awards two scholarships (it began in the 2009 freshman year) to incoming freshman students at Harford Community College and Cecil College, residing in Harford and Cecil Counties.
Each college administers the scholarships through their respective foundations established for such purposes with the NMTC.
Warren Mullins, Vice President of Battelle, had been the long-term President of the Northeastern Maryland Technology Council (1998-2009) and a guiding force in our technology community. Throughout his career, he strongly advocated for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education as a vital component in strengthening our nation in the global marketplace.
Upon Mullin's retirement in 2009, and in Warren's honor, the NMTC began funding these two annual scholarships, open to all STEM high school seniors in Harford and Cecil Counties based on them meeting both colleges' internal criteria and the determination of the NMTC scholarship selection committee.
Criteria for scholarship
Each college's potential recipients will be identified in their regular selection timetable and submitted to the NMTC scholarship selection committee. The NMTC scholarship selection committee determines the final selection.
The NMTC, to accept the recommendation of students from each college, ask that the following be included along with the college's criteria for determining the student's eligibility:
- Eligibility requirements include a 3.5 minimum GPA or equivalent, an academic record verified by transcript, educator recommendation, personal statement, and list of STEM-related activities that demonstrate a genuine commitment to pursuing a STEM college track as identified in a written essay*. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents and reside in Harford and Cecil Counties.
- The typed essay of approximately 500 words will describe the applicant's interests and experience relative to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. This essay should contain any additional information relevant to the application, such as why the scholarship is vital to the applicant. The NMTC scholarship selection committee will then review the paper in a timely fashion before choosing the student.
Where possible, the student's chosen will be acknowledged and possibly speak at the NMTC's Visionary Awards, the year following their scholarship award.
